#BREAKING MP's considering going on strike over pay rise. Workers collectively facepalm #nzpol #firstworldproblems
Heather dPA @HDPA
We've laid down the challenge to the MPs. If you don't want a pay rise, make it stop http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/challenge-mps-change-law-if-you-don-t-want-pay-rise-video-6243023 …
Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
No Member of Parliament is in it for the money, especially on the blue team.
> McDub @singlemaltz
@prinnbanktce Not the salary anyway. There's a long game being played by some though, surely?
> Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
@singlemaltz Not really, most Tory MPs earn 5x what a backbencher does before entering parliament.
George Darroch @mrdarroch
The MPs payrise will hurt the government (with the public) more than going to war.
Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
Unpopular view: Spend a day in an MPs office and tell me they don't earn it. It isn't all embassy canapes and kindergarten openings.
paulbrislen @paulbrislen
Dear politicians. You're hired for a 3-year term so how about we review wages at that point for the next cycle.
Bee-njamin @KaroriBee
Whatever MPs are getting paid, our City Councillors need one hell of a payrise. There are heaps of good people put off by the fact they...
> Bee-njamin @KaroriBee ·
...can't support their family off the back of $50,000-$70,000 a year. They also have to spend a good chunk of that up front to GET elected..
caniwi @caniwikiwi
Why link MP pay rises to CEO salaries? They're not CEOs. Their work & responsibilities don't equate to CEOs. PM/cabinet might equate to CEOs
> Gina Rangi @mokai77
@caniwikiwi nope. CEOs are paid well so company can attract talent. But pay isnt a relevant consideration when attracting MP candidates
> caniwi @caniwikiwi
@mokai77 Exactly. Who determined we should link MP pay scale to the highest paid (scandalously so) people in the country??
Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
Every year like clockwork we are forced to take part in the MP payrises paegant. I know quite a few MPs. They work hard. But perhaps...
> Graeme Edgeler @GraemeEdgeler
.@prinnbanktce they worked hard last year too, though right? So that's an excuse for high salaries, not high salary increases?
> Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
@GraemeEdgeler I refer to how this happens every year and it is the same controversy every year.
> Graeme Edgeler @GraemeEdgeler
.@prinnbanktce because, every year, while lacking any evidence of increased MP productivity, MPs get increases higher than inflation.
> Paul Rooney @roonsopo
@GraemeEdgeler correct, if my billable hours don't increase its bad luck son try again in 12 months @prinnbanktce
> Alex Coleman @ShakingStick
@GraemeEdgeler @prinnbanktce It's the bit where they claim that they are just victims of the system man, that does my head in.
> Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
@ShakingStick @GraemeEdgeler if the other option is letting MPs set their own pay, the current situation is better.
> Alex Coleman @ShakingStick
@prinnbanktce @GraemeEdgeler There are other options. Doesn't have to be based on comparisons with a borked 'top executive market rate'
> Terry Baucher @Trabaq
@ShakingStick @GraemeEdgeler @prinnbanktce To me it's the most unconscionable part: MPs are legislators so if they don't like it, fix it
> Jordan M. @prinnbanktce
@ShakingStick @GraemeEdgeler can think of few jobs that are 24/7 like that, nurses maybe? Who also get generous O/T and regular increases
> Graeme Edgeler @GraemeEdgeler
@prinnbanktce @ShakingStick MPs are more generously paid than nurses, and their jobs were not greatly different before their increases.
The Ruminator @RuminatorNZ
I'm convinced the Remuneration Authority are just Annual Trolls who just like to upset EVERYONE. And then pay MPs fucking heaps.
André Alessi @AndreAlessi
Being an MP is a shit job, and I have no problem with them getting a pay rise (even the ones I think are dicks.)
Helen Kelly @helenkellyCTU
Big failure 2 analyse MP pay prob. Based on CEO rates who continue 2 scoop up wealth in unfair proportions as PM destroys bargaining 4 wkers
Bounder @DawgBelly ·
I don't think MPs are paid too much, I think most ppl are paid too little... Esp cleaners, nurses, carers and anyone who deals w/ poo.
Maxine Gay @GayMaxine
We need limits on chief executive pay 2 no more than 20 x ave worker in the w/place. The rem authority links MPs pay 2 CEs @NzMorningReport
Bridget R @beekaynz
The MP pay rise makes me really, REALLY angry. How many people haven't had pay rises since the global economic hoopla?
Mike off of RDU @rdumike
Using punter maths - 119 MPs pay rise + the PMs pay rise (119x $9k plus $23K) is just shy of $1.1m a year. 1/3
Alison Grant @AlisonLPG
NZ midwives had a 2 percent pay rise in 2012. Nothing for 7 years prior or the 2.5 years since. Guess how I feel about MPs' pay rise today.
Clarabelle @AucklandIsland
John Key helpless against the power & might of the scary Remuneration Authority.#getsomeguts
The Egonomist @TheEgonomist
Link MPs salary to the inverse of a Zinger burger then we'll start seeing real change
Andrea Vance @avancenz
Rem Auth's John Errington cuts through MPs bluster on pay: "They set the criteria & the process, and we think we follow that pretty well."
> Stephen Keys @SteveKunframed
@avancenz Anyone ever revisited the urban legend around the PM donating his salary to charity? Has Lab ever promised to change the process?
Emma Hart @Ghetsuhm
Waiting for the rush of MPs donating their unwanted pay rises to Rape Crisis.
Idiot/Savant @norightturnnz
The only purpose of the Remuneration Authority is so MPs can pretend they are powerless to stop their rorting.
Alex Coleman @ShakingStick
John Key so outraged about remuneration authority he's gonna stroke his sideburns and try and figure out what does legislation.
RachelNZ @3RachelNZ3
Let's not forget MPs also get expenses. Average and low paid workers do not. The more you have the more you get #nzpol #inequality
Giovanni Tiso @gtiso
A populist move I want to see a left-wing party campaign for: linking increases in MPs' salaries to increases in the unemployment benefit.
> Craig Ranapia @CMRanapia
@gtiso How about linking MP's salary increases to those of nurses and teachers who are constantly told to show "wage restraint"?
RNZ Checkpoint @CheckpointRNZ
A 5.5% pay rise for MPs - the PM is disappointed it's going up, but will still take it. We'll hear from the agency behind the rise at 5.30.
> RachelNZ @3RachelNZ3
@CheckpointRNZ Every year he says he's disappointed! He's had years to fix it. Talk is cheap, MPs, not so cheap.
Flies over Grey Lynn @radioovermoscow
Every year, MPs complain about getting pay rises. If only someone out there could change the law so it never happens again
David Farrar @dpfdpf
MPs salary bill has increased from $21.9 million to $23.2 million - 5.6% increase, but 3.6% if one takes account of reduced perks.
Lew @LewSOS
So the basic problem is that the Remuneration Authority is required to compare MP pay to other executive-level 1%er jobs.
mjfield @mjfield
Great news, the soldiers going to Iraq are getting a 5.4% rise too. Right? http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/66672796/backbench-mp-pay-rises-8200-a-year …
Sacha Dylan @kaupapa
PM being disingenuous about MP payrise - they're benchmarked against executives, not working stiffs. #nzpol
> Winston Smith@5WinstonSmith5
@kaupapa Key and his colleagues can use Parliamentary majority to change how their pay is determined any time they want.
Dovil @Dovil
MPs salaries should be means tested. And John Key can pay us for the privilege of being filthy rich AND Prime Minister.
Philip Lyth @philiplyth
The full Parliamentary Salaries determination is at http://legislation.co.nz/regulation/public/2015/0041/latest/whole.html?search=ad_act%40bill%40regulation%40deemedreg__parliamentary_2014-2016___25_ac%40bc%40rc%40dc%40apub%40aloc%40apri%40apro%40aimp%40bgov%40bloc%40bpri%40bmem%40rpub%40rimp_ac%40bc%40rc%40ainf%40anif%40bcur%40rinf%40rnif%40raif%40rasm%40rrev_h_aw_se&p=1#DLM6390015 … - including the increased tax-free allowance of $317.60/wk

> Catherine Delahunty @greencatherine 4h4 hours ago
@nzherald @nzteu let's change the rules then and make Remuneration Authority set up a fair framework
> Chris Diack @DiackChris
@TaxpayersUnion @greencatherine @nzherald @nzteu link to annual growth in GDP. It's what the Swiss would do if they paid their MPs
mjfield @mjfield
All these MPs speaking in outraged terms over being forced to take their pay rises. Its so sad, new box of tissues stuff
Catherine Delahunty @greencatherine
@kazmil1 @NZGreens the MP wage is an embarrassment and should be tied to median individual income not increased!
Alex Coleman @ShakingStick
In many ways the MPs pay racket is a beautiful thing.
Heather dPA @HDPA
Questioned on pay rises for MPs, @JudithCollinsMP responds thus: "I'm always happy to be here, very joyful in my work."
Hamish Keith @hamish_keith
Here is a plan - adopt the PM’s notion to change the way MP pay is set and index it to the minimum wage
Idiot/Savant @norightturnnz
I would love to see someone put together a montage of all john Key's past comments on MP's pay rises @CampbellLiveNZ
Election Satire @SatireNZ
@johnkeypm against MP pay rises. "performance bonuses okay though, although Bill will miss out"
Lamia @LI_politico
Agree with @norightturnnz - surveillance laws can be passed under urgency so can freezing MP pay. Parliamentary sovereignty and what not.
Idiot/Savant @norightturnnz
A question for our MPs: don't you think you're paid well enough already?
Dovil @Dovil
I think it's good MPs are getting a 10k pay rise. Must be hard juggling so many mortgages on so many lifestyle and investment properties.
Suziam @Suzyiam
MP's get $5.00 an hour pay rise - whilst the proletariat gets a mere .50 cents. MP's also get perks and expenses - Value For Money? TUI
Philip Lyth @philiplyth
Key doesn't want an MPs' pay raise? I can write a bill by 2pm, and he can have passed through all stages by 6pm. My fees are reasonable.
Idiot/Savant @norightturnnz
Every year Key says MPs don't need a pay rise. Some years he even threatens to change the law. However, he never does.
Marcus Cook @MarcusDCook
Cmon guys, if we didn't pay our MPs well, we'd get 120 of the most useless, incompetent, out of touch, muppets going. *cough*
Shackleford Hurtmore @shacklemore
Minimum wage goes up 50c/hr MP wage goes up 10% A rising tide lifts us all.
