When the National Government made their notorious benefit cuts in 1991, the non-profit Wellington People's Centre sprung up in response. For a low membership fee the centre has provided all sorts of services for the poor, as well as lobbying for change. The fact that Labour has refused to reverse the benefit cuts, and that poverty and inequality have increased under Labour, means that agencies and cooperatives like the People's Centre are needed more than ever. Following on from Labour's neoliberal Budget, it's timely that Radio NZ-National are broadcasting a Spectrum documentary about the Centre, called By the People, For the People, which you can hear on Sunday 27 May at 12:15pm.
