The low-paid Unite union run by Matt McCarten has moved into new offices today on Queen Street in Auckland, from which the radical union will be flying red flags from - see their press release. Unite is an impressive and innovative model of unionism that hasn't really been seen much in New Zealand. It's the type of thing that the NZ left has long advocated, and is a refreshing contrast to most of moribund union movement. The Spark newspaper has had a fair bit of coverage and analysis of Unite - for example, see here, here, and here. In other union news, it's finally become public knowledge that CTU president is stepping down. Labourite AUS organiser, Helen Kelly, seems likely to replace Wilson (although Kelly is also keen to be the Wellington Central candidate for Labour in 2008).
