Farmers in NZ are normally seen as being influential over National Governments, but ignored by Labour ones. This is no longer the case, and there have been numerous examples of where this Labour Government has been unusually farmer friendly. The old division of National Party = farmers and business, and Labour Party = workers and poor, is long gone. Chris Trotter reflects on such issues in his latest Dominion Post column. He says that when you think of the typical NZ farmer, think of Enron rather than Fred Dagg. Farms are increasingly the preserve of the very rich.
