New Zealand has always had an exploitative relationship with the Pacific Islands, especially in terms of using Pacific Island labour in times of employer labour shortages. The Government imports Pacific workers to help out NZ businesses and then ships them back home as soon as their immediately usefulness has been served. The latest example of this is the Recognised Seasonal Employment scheme which starts in April this year. A good analysis is published on the World Socialist Web Site, which says that rather than being benevolent, 'New Zealand is using its position as a minor imperial power in the region to cynically exploit desperately impoverished and oppressed Pacific peoples for its own economic ends'.
