It's no surprise that the Electoral Commission has refuted the allegations of Nicky Hager and the Greens about National breaking the Electoral Act in terms of using trusts to fund political activity. It's hard to see why the complaint was made in the first place, as anyone with any basic understanding of the Electoral Act would realise that the use of trusts is very legal - even if the political party knows where the trusts get their money from. Labour and Greens will push for trusts to be more regulated under the Electoral Act, but they're mainly chasing shadows - or maybe just political points - as this is an area in which there will always be loopholes found to channel money anonymously to the parties.
