I've just downloaded Jarvis Cocker's current single - 'Running the World', and I love it. Read more below.
I'm often bemoaning the lack of contemporary political music, but this song gives it in spades, with the chorus 'C*nts are still running the world'. Jarvis - as he is increasingly known by, without surname - is singing about the world under Blair et al aided by Bono and friends. This cynical song starts with a critique of conservative justifications for inequality: 'Well did you hear, there’s a natural order: Those most deserving will end up with the most; that the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top, Well I say: Shit floats.' This is Jarvis' most political song yet, although he's always been a champion of the working class and outsiders with brilliant songs like Common People, Mis-Shapes, I Spy, and Cocaine Socialism.
You can listen to Running the World at Jarvis' myspace, or watch it on YouTube, or read the lyrics here, and read the Guardian 5-star review of his new album. And of course, for more on Jarvis, check out his wikipedia entry.
