It’s only four weeks to go, but it’s going to be a very long, intense four weeks of electioneering. Therefore politicos are advised to seek out whatever political humour and satire you can find, because much of the campaign is going to be pretty serious, and often very boring. Today’s recommendations, therefore, are Steven Braunias’ The Secret Diary Of ... Phil Goff, Imperator Fish’s The Leaders Debate: Some Predictions, and Dave Armstrong’s The miseries within a Treasury financial forecast.
Most attention over the last few days has been on the television opening addresses on Friday and Saturday nights. These are well evaluated and reported by the following items: David Farrar’s The Campaign TV Openings, Russell Brown’s We interrupt this broadcast ..., Vernon Small’s Key defends campaign advert, Matthew Hooton’s Labour/Green Axis Gets Boost from Opening Night Ads, and Andrew Geddis’ Politics on the radio without pictures.
Apart from the above pieces, there’s actually a wealth of important items today that are all worth reading. But in particularly, the following items stand out: John Hartevelt’s Politics, policy and personality, Andrea Vance’s Business supports super review: survey, Martin Van Beynen’s Hard to care about elections, John Armstrong’s Key boxes clever on assets, but public's not buying it, Matt McCarten’s 'Courage' costly for working-class Kiwis, and Kiwipolitico’s Is a Blue-Green Foreign Policy Possible?. Below are the internet links to all the NZ politics material from the last 24 hours that are either informative, insightful, interesting or influential. This list and the links are taken from a fuller document, NZ Politics Daily, which is emailed out, Monday to Friday, to various researchers, academics, journalists, MPs and so forth. The document is purely for research purposes only, and if you would like to be on the subscription list, please email: bryce.edwards@otago.ac.nz
